MIDVALE, Utah - A shiny new copper and glass 20,000 square foot senior center has erected in the community, a new symbol of Midvale history. In addition to Its symbolism of The City the real selling point for the facility is it’s features.
The facility also has the biggest exercise area of any senior citizen center in the valley. In a report by Fox 13, Becky Capp, Director for Salt Lake County Aging and Adult Services, says that the main point is to keep people healthy and active.
But there’s much more to the story.
Fox 13 correspondent Dave Nemeth reports on the complete story.

Unexplainable, Paranormal Activity at Play
Interestingly, something unforseen to Ms. Capp is happening to patrons of the Center, the cafeteria food is causing people to be lethargic and nobody knows why. Instead of being active people are flocking in droves to Midvale Cheers to “Relax”, says senior citizen and frequent visitor Paul Bingham.
First I interviewed Mr. Bingham to gain more insight on why he prefers to skip,“the active stuff”. He says despite the good intentions strange things keep happening to him.
“ ...It’s like magic. You tell me what it is. There’s this energy force that pulls me away from the stair stepper. I close my eyes for a hot second and I’m there with my buddies knocking the beers back at Cheers.”
“ It’s cheap and the atmosphere is friendly there,” says Paul. But he says he still doesn’t know how or why he keeps going back so frequently. Says it’s “unexplainable”.
Strange incidents like Paul’s experience are not stand alone anomalies though. As we did more digging, we were able to find other weird and unexplainable happenings around the senior center. Our next logical step was to examine the food.
“Something in the Water” Says Patron
Some say that one of the best parts about the new facility is the free cafeteria to anybody over 60. However, evidence suggests that this bonus feature is actually becoming a serious problem needing to be addressed.
Milly Paterson, a frequent visitor of the Center, speaks out on why she thinks none of the treadmills, machines, or free weights are been used. She says it’s the cafeteria food that’s to blame.
“ Well, I think there’s something in water. My heavens who knows what came over them. All I know is a great big group of guys and gals headed to Midvale cheers the night before the incident.” When asked what happened next she said,
“At the cafeteria the next morning the group was so gosh darn hungry they ate the whole continental breakfast meant for the whole facility in 15 minutes. If you ask me the free food at the cafeteria is turning my fellow seniors into gluttons.” Milly is confident that once people get used to the offering they will calm down a bit.
We still have a lot of unanswered questions. what is causing people to neglect the rest of the great features after breakfast? And also, what’s causing people to eat so much? It’s unclear whether the incidents are connected.
It seems no matter how attractive the benefits to the club are, having Cheers to You down the street is taking the wind out of the sails of this grand facility. This, we do know.
