In this week’s blog post, we’re going to show you how to make your very own beer. We’ve all had those days when you have a stomach bug and just can’t make it into your local Cheers to You for a nice pint, well we’ve got you covered. Sure sure sure, you’ve got a 7-11 down the street and might as well pick up a 30 pack. But no no, not You! You’re one of those mustache wearing fellows or red lipstick strutting women that don’t have the word ‘lazy’ in their vocabulary.
(Not me so I had to hire someone else to make this post)
I digress...
In today’s example we’re analyzing the ingredients that come inside of a beer making box kit made by Food Farmer Earth. If you’re interested you can find the link below:
These kits are easily found online. The Beer Nut downtown also has their own kind of make your own beer kit as well.
In just half a day you’ll have your very own brew to take on even the best microbreweries in town!
Here’s what comes in the kit
malt extract
This is a key ingredient. To be exact, it’s the extracted fermentable sugars of malted barley making up a dried sweetener. In the packaging you’ll find the consistency is similar to a thick sauce.
a bag of crushed specialty grains
Specialty grains are important to the extract style brew. Steeping the specialty grains helps create the base of what’s called “wart” and helps aid in adding freshness to the brew. Extracts can age after time which causes a change in taste and appearance so this helps correct that natural change.
vacuum sealed hops
The hops are what create the characteristic taste of beer. Not all hops are the same but generally hops are what create the bitter taste that is commonly associated with beers such as the India Pale Ale otherwise known as an I.P.A.
muslin bags
A tool used in beer making to hold hops. As the hops boil inside of the muslin bag the characteristic hop taste will counter the malt which can be too sweet and overwhelming.
yeast
Adding yeast is crucial to the fermentation process. It’s at this point that the wart, which you’ve spent hours delicately making, turns into beer.
whirlfloc tablet
The tablet helps coagulate the proteins which would normally cause a “hazy” beer. Meaning that, in the end the beer maintains the visual appeal and clarity that it’s supposed to.
There you have it! Now you have some background in making your own beer. What are you waiting for?
